Solo Travel

<P – Have you ever taken a trip by yourself? Do you prefer to travel with people or alone?

I’ve never done an entire trip by myself. But just as I don’t mind being alone, I don’t mind traveling alone.

Every year for the last 8 (9?) years, I’ve gone to a conference with the March of Dimes. It’s a long weekend away from home, with women who just get it. So, it’s not necessarily a trip alone, but I travel alone to get there. It feels very grown-up and sophisticated to go to the airport and fly somewhere all by yourself. Most days are spent in my workout clothes, cleaning up after four other people, plus three dogs and two cats. Then there’s the school carpool, homework, grocery/Costco shopping, cooking, laundry, shuttling to lessons and classes. Very suburban, very mom-ish. When I go to the conference, I feel different. For awhile, I can pretend to once again be a professional working person. I wear nice clothes. I put those heels on. I grab a vente latte, and breeze my way through the airport. I feel like a real grown-up. It’s awesome. By day two, I desperately miss my family.  When it’s time to come home, I’m exhausted but also revitalized and ready to take on the SAHM role once again.

I love driving by myself. It’s so freeing. If it’s a sunny day, with a few puffy clouds rolling across the sky and I can roll down the windows, I am in heaven. I can choose the music I want to listen to, and sing along at the top of my voice without anyone laughing at me or complaining. I’ve done so many road trips by myself, starting my sophomore year of college when I would go home for the occasional weekend. It doesn’t usually get lonely for me. I have time to think, or just time to be.

I don’t know I would ever take a full vacation by myself. New sights are more fun when you have someone to share them with. Adventures seem more adventurous when you’re with friends or family. Plus I get nervous and anxious when I’m in a new and unfamiliar place. I need someone I know along with me to keep  that in check.

Have you ever traveled alone? What’s your favorite road trip song?

  1. I’ve traveled alone for most of the past 5 years, and have trouble doing it any other way now. While packing up, I sometime find myself humming Tom Petty’s “It’s time to move on, time to get going, what lies ahead I have no way of knowing. But under my feet, baby, the grass is growing, so it’s time to move on, time to get going.”

  2. I travel alone every once in a while and love it. There are things I really enjoy about traveling alone (freedom!), and there are things I really enjoy about traveling with my family, like new experiences, no daily activities stress, sharing something exiting.

  3. I love traveling alone. I love traveling with my family, but once a year I go off on my own. No schedules no compromises on what I want to eat, when I want to eat, where I want to go….you should try it. My wife also takes her own trips….sanity.
